Mombasa Street Food: A Flavourful Timeless Journey

Mombasa: Chow Down Time!

Growing up in Mombasa, the aroma of sizzling spices and the chatter of street vendors were the lullabies of my childhood. Food wasn’t just sustenance; it was a language of love, shared across generations. Every corner held a promise of a new taste, a new memory.

I remember countless afternoons spent with my mother, exploring the labyrinthine streets of Old Town. She’d hold my hand as we navigated the vibrant chaos of her committee meetings and other affairs, her eyes sparkling with shared secrets of hidden food gems. It was in these moments that my love affair with Mombasa’s street food truly began.

Every weekend, was a day dedicated to exploring the city with my father, starting with spending half of the day in his old workplace D J Lowe where I learnt how Kenyan Tea is made from scratch, tasting each cup of a fresh batch of brewed tea leaves alongside my father, learning about how the tea is dried, roasted, blended, brewed and finally packed. As my clothes started storing the scent of freshly brewed tea, little did I know that those small moments turned into me loving tea so much!

From the workplace of my father, we had a fixed schedule of exploring the city as we walked home. From stopping at Azad Ice Cream starting with my favourite Vanilla Softy when we took the shortcut, or Blueroom’s Chocnut Special when we took the main road (long road to home). From getting viazi and bhajia for my mother or simply fried chicken from Yukay’s Chicken, every street of Mombasa holds a special place for me and my memories with my parents.

From the crispy, golden-brown bhajias to the sweet tanginess of sugarcane juice, every bite was a journey through time. The city’s diverse culture is beautifully reflected in its cuisine, a harmonious blend of African, Arab, and Indian influences.

With all these beautiful memories, now just left as memories after losing both my parents, I wanted to share with you all my beautiful memories and the best of the best. I’ll be your guide through the bustling streets, introducing you to the flavours that have shaped my life. We’ll savour the sweet, the spicy, and everything in between. Are you ready?

A Local's Guide to Mombasa Street Food : Tips You can Follow

There’s more to Mombasa’s street food than just great taste. It’s about the experiences, the people, and the vibrant atmosphere. Here are a few tips to enhance your culinary adventure:

  • Bargaining is NOT always an art: While bargaining is fair when buying tangible things in Mombasa, I feel Mombasa street food prices are usually fair unless you know you are being ripped apart as a foreigner.
  • Embrace the chaos: The best street food experiences often happen in the heart of the action. Don’t be afraid to get lost in the vibrant chaos of the city.
  • Try everything: Don’t be shy to experiment with new flavours and dishes. That’s the beauty of street food – it’s a culinary adventure!
  • Eat like a local: Observe how locals eat their food. It’s a great way to experience authentic flavours and learn about local customs.
  • Street food etiquette: Be respectful of local customs and practices. A simple “Asante sana” (thank you very much) goes a long way.

Personal Anecdotes

One of my favourite moments was discovering a hidden stall that served the most incredible cassava chips. They were crispy, perfectly seasoned, and addictive! Every time I used to walk with my mother or father with every new corner we discovered new places and new tastes of our favourites. We’d often grab a bag and enjoy them at home with a sip of tea.

Another unforgettable experience was trying a unique fruit for the first time called fufu, a small black fruit almost like a berry but with a quite distinct flavour and taste, which sadly after that day never found again. It was a flavour explosion, a perfect blend of sweet and tart. I’ve been hooked ever since, but have never found it again, if anyone who is reading knows about this fruit please do let me know its English name or where it can be found.

Beyond the classic street food, some hidden gems deserve a mention. Look out for small, family-run stalls that often serve the most authentic and delicious food. Don’t be afraid to step off the beaten path and explore the local neighbourhoods.

I highly recommend trying the sugarcane juice. It’s refreshing and incredibly satisfying, especially on a hot day. And don’t forget to indulge in sweet treats like the HB Naankhatai or the Chocnut Sundae.
